Patrick Simkins: Interactive Installation: Three Heads

Shot and Edited by Elliot Bobin

Concept by Patrick Simkins

Music by MiM

Description by Patrick Simkins (Artist):

In September 2013, during a residency with DegreeArt gallery, the public were asked to break down three heads placed on top of each other. They then stepped outside to rebuild two as they so wished. The concept invited the public to question the value of a culture in which we preconceive others, particularly with the media as a vehicle, and the role we play in the process. More than 65 people were involved.

This was the result…

Patrick Simkins’ current practice studies the distorted values that we place on objects, experiences and eachother within the context of an increasingly online and consumerist world. He is particularly interested in how individuals relate to one another, and how we view and document the world around us.

THE HEADS depict conventional and universal representatives of modern society. They are a reflection of the pressure that society heaps on people. The large size of the pieces pays tribute to the subject, acting almost as a shrine. But, by pinning the pieces to the wall, I have accentuated the subject’s transience and impermanence: the representation feels easily disposable, ready to be pulled apart. It is a process that raises questions about our own morality and how we view celebrity. It touches on the theme of human fragility and the hypothesis that greatness is ultimately flawed.

The current trial of athlete Oscar Pistorius, whom the artist met and painted in 2011, is an eery reminder of how someone can go from hero to zero in a matter of days, as well as the role that society plays in advancing both sides of the coin.

Couple of screengrabs from Kontrollerism UK’s first battle Skaggy n Phatty B vs Ruff Tek n T-Menace, that I shot this weekend hosted by Grim Toe Hi-Fi. Videos soon.

So I got a Black Magic Cinema Camera and its pretty cool.

I was originally looking at getting a 5DIII but with the prices ending up fairly similar I’m hoping the 2.5k will make it a bit more future proof.

Anyway here’s some footage I shot of Southend reggae band Tallowah, I shoot a fair amount of bands in these sort of pub/venue locations and couldn’t really find any footage of this sorta thing from the bmcc (probably because most people are shooting super pretty cinematic stuff, but if people like me can afford this camera its worth showing what it can do on some of these lower end jobs)

So here it is, first time out in the real world with the black magic cinema camera.

(Oh and the sound is on a H4n, the sound on the black magic is horrid but I’ve kinda come to expect that shooting with DSLR for so long so hey ho.)
